How did I learn guitar? I simply became interested in guitar playing. I picked up an old guitar that was laying around my grandma's house and started playing it. It probably took me several months before I could play anything, but still I learned. All by myself. Learning by yourself, without having any guidance does have it's drawbacks. You can pick-up the wrong technique, and once you do that it's not that easy to correct it.

Going to a guitar coach does have drawbacks also - first it will cost you lots of money, and second you'll have to wait a long time before he teaches you anything. First you'll learn lots of music theory and learn to play only scales. The good side is that he'll show you how to play guitar the right way.

Electric or Acoustic?

It makes very little difference. The main difference is not in the way of playing, but that electric guitars require amplifiers and loudspeakers, which you have to carry around if you're travelling. Learning electric guitar is slightly easier - it requires less pressure of your fingers to fret a note, and generally speaking is easier to play.

Becoming a master guitar player takes a long time - whether or not you want to put in the time is up to you.
